Explore scenic landscapes on a museum visit or an outreach session delivered in your school.

Exploring Landscapes can be adapted for pre-formal, informal, semi-formal and formal curriculum pathways, and is designed to develop skills and cultural capital.

This session can support the National Curriculum for Art and Design, Arts Award: Discover and Explore, and the Engagement Model. Sessions are led by SEND specialists, with Makaton support and Widgit symbols where helpful.

We will work with you to tailor the session, which is supported by handling materials and sensory resources.

Experience the Outdoors Indoors

The Rainbow Landscape by Peter Paul Rubens is a magnificent panoramic view of the countryside outside the artist’s house. Together in the galleries or classroom, experience this landscape through colours, scents, textures and sounds. Explore weather, animals and people, and think about why we make art. Adaptable for all curriculum pathways.

Creative Activities

Students can use Rubens’s Rainbow Landscape as inspiration to create their own imagined environment. We recommend one of the following activities in our Learning Studio or in your classroom:

• Create and experience a sound and colour scape. Produce an interactive installation, using colourful fabrics, sound tiles and scents. Adaptable for all curriculum pathways.

• Collage your own landscape using a range of art materials, natural textures and images from the Collection. Adaptable for students on an informal, semi-formal or formal curriculum pathway.

• Explore rainbow colours and design through printmaking. Transfer drawings onto polystyrene tiles to produce colourful designs with water-based inks. Designed for students on a semi-formal to formal curriculum pathway.

• Construct a 3D layered landscape out of acetate. Designed for students on a semi-formal to formal curriculum pathway.

We provide booklets for students to log their museum visit and what they have discovered. These can be continued in school, used in class displays, or taken home.
